ROSE GERANIUM
Rose Geranium
Botanical Name: Pelargonium graveolens Botanical Family: Geraniaceae
Quick Facts
· Extraction Method: Steam Distillation
· Part Used: Leaves and Stems
· Aroma Note: Middle
The Profile
While there are over 700 varieties of Geranium, Pelargonium graveolens is the most prized in aromatherapy. "Rose Geranium" is a specific variety of this plant that possesses a much softer, more floral, and sweeter aroma than "Bourbon" or "Standard" Geranium, which can be somewhat sharp or minty. It is a hairy perennial shrub with small pink flowers. Often called "The Great Harmonizer," Rose Geranium has a unique chemical makeup that allows it to balance extremes—whether that be dry vs. oily skin, or high vs. low emotions.
Therapeutic Actions
Antidepressant, Antiseptic, Astringent, Cicatrizant, Cytophylactic (tissue regenerative), Diuretic, Haemostatic, Styptic, Tonic, Vermifuge, Vulnerary.
Usage & Benefits
· Skin: This is a "holy grail" oil for skincare. It is a sebum balancer, meaning it tells oily skin to produce less oil and dry skin to produce more. It is excellent for acne, eczema, bruises, and mature skin.
· Hormonal Support: Highly effective for PMS, menopausal symptoms, and breast engorgement. It helps regulate the endocrine system.
· Circulatory/Muscular: It is a powerful lymphatic stimulant, making it a primary choice for treating cellulite, fluid retention (edema), and poor circulation.
· Nervous System: Relieves neuralgia and nervous tension. It is particularly good for "burnout" where the person feels emotionally depleted.
· First Aid: Its styptic (blood-stopping) properties make it useful for minor cuts and wounds.
Emotional Benefit
Rose Geranium is the "Oil of Emotional Balance." It is the bridge between the mind and the heart. It is specifically indicated for "perfectionists" or people who have lost touch with their emotional life due to over-intellectualizing. It helps to ease fear of abandonment and encourages self-love and emotional honesty.
The "At Home" Remedies
1. The "Hormonal Harmony" Massage: Mix 3 drops of Rose Geranium and 3 drops of Clary Sage in 10ml of Evening Primrose oil. Massage onto the abdomen during your cycle to ease cramps and irritability.
2. Glow-Boosting Face Oil: Add 1 drop of Rose Geranium to 10ml of Jojoba oil. Apply nightly to balance the complexion and promote a healthy, rosy glow.
3. Ankle De-Puffer: Mix 5 drops into a tablespoon of carrier oil and massage the legs in an upward motion (toward the heart) to help reduce swollen ankles after a long day of standing.
Synergy Blend
