LAVENDER and LAVANDIN Do you know the difference?

Lavender oil is embraced around the world for its diverse therapeutic uses. Although Australians began to appreciate lavender oil relatively early, the world market is also now recognizing its value and demand is increasing rapidly.

The most prominent plant species grown for essential oil production are:
Lavandula angustifolia - true, common or garden lavender, also known as Lavandula vera and Lavandula officinalis. This species produces the best medicinal quality oil.
Lavandula spica - aspic or spike lavender, also known as Lavandula latifolia. Producing a much greater yield of oil, this may be irritating to the skin because of its high camphor content.
Bastard lavender - is a hybrid derived from the first two producing a lesser quality oil, known as Lavandin. Commonly sold as Lavender, this oil is also high in camphor and may be more aggravating than soothing to skin irritations.

Commodity Pricing
Today's production of true Lavender oil in France is approx. 90 tons per year while that of Lavandin oil averages 1600 tons per year. As price is directly affected by production yields, Lavandin is available at a much lesser cost to the true Lavender. And because of this, commercial advantage is often gained by substituting Lavandin for true Lavender.

What is Available
Much of the Lavender oil marketed, is actually Lavandin oil that has been diluted, extended or constructed with synthetic and unnatural additives. This type of adulteration no doubt lessens the therapeutic quality.

So, is what you are purchasing true Lavender oil or an artificial version?
Many consumers, accustomed to the common smell of synthetic Lavender fragrance and/or Lavandin, do not recognize the aroma of true Lavender. Some product labelling has not proven to be reliable or truthful. Biosense Canada proudly gives you our guarantee that when you purchase a Biosense Lavender oil (either French or Tasmanian) that it will be 100% true and noble Lavender, Lavandula Angustifolia.

True & Noble Lavender oil, possesses a multitude of therapeutic uses. The following list of Lavender's applications, is by no means exhaustive; however, these simple treatments are some of the most common uses.

BLUE BOTTLE STINGS, TICK, WASP and INSECT BITES - dab neat onto affected areas to soothe itching and inflammation.
ECZEMA, DERMATITIS and PSORIASIS - for relief of symptoms and relief of the effects of psoriasis on the skin, mix 5-10 drops in 10ml Biosense Jojoba oil and apply to affected area twice daily. Do not use for prolonged periods without consulting a health care professional.
HEADACHE - for temporary relief dab one or two drops directly onto the temples, forehead and on the back of the neck.
INSOMNIA - mix 5-10 drops in 10ml Biosense carrier oil for a relaxing neck and shoulder massage; add 5-10 drops in the bath before bedtime; vaporize 5-10 drops in an oil burner or sprinkle a few drops on pillow for relief.
RESTLESSNESS and MILD ANXIETY - add a few drops in the bath or 5-10 drops in an oil burner - for young children, dab one or two drops on clothing near collar.
STRESS and NERVOUS TENSION - add a few drops to the bath or 5-10 drops in an oil burner for comforting relief.
