ORANGE (Sweet)
Orange (Sweet)
Botanical Name: Citrus sinensis Botanical Family: Rutaceae
Quick Facts
· Extraction Method: Cold Expression
· Part Used: Fresh Fruit Peel
· Aroma Note: Top
The Profile
Sweet Orange is one of the most popular and "friendly" oils in aromatherapy. Unlike Bitter Orange (which is used to make Neroli and Petitgrain), Sweet Orange is the scent of the familiar, juicy fruit. It is often called the "Smile in a Bottle" because of its immediate ability to lift the mood. Historically, oranges were symbols of innocence and fertility. The oil is bright, sunny, and intensely sweet, bringing a sense of warmth and happiness to any environment.
Therapeutic Actions
Antidepressant, Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Carminative, Cholagogue, Digestive, Febrile, Sedative (nervous), Stimulant (digestive and lymphatic), Stomachic, Tonic.
Usage & Benefits
· Skin: Dull and oily complexions. It helps to support collagen formation in the skin and can be used to treat mouth ulcers (when heavily diluted).
· Respiratory: Not its primary use, but it is excellent for soothing a "nervous" cough or clearing the air during winter.
· Digestive: Constipation, dyspepsia, and flatulence. It is a gentle stimulant for the bowels and helps the body absorb Vitamin C.
· Circulatory/Muscular: Cellulite and edema. Like Grapefruit, it helps with lymphatic drainage and the elimination of toxins.
· Immune System: Colds and flu. It is a wonderful "preventative" oil during the change of seasons.
· Nervous System: Insomnia, anxiety, and stress. While many citrus oils are purely stimulating, Sweet Orange has a unique ability to calm the nerves while simultaneously uplifting the spirit.
Emotional Benefit
Sweet Orange is the "Oil of Abundance." It helps to dissipate the "scarcity mindset" (the fear that there isn't enough to go around). It encourages playfulness, creativity, and a positive outlook. It is especially beneficial for "type-A" personalities who have become too rigid or serious, helping them to let go of the need for perfection and embrace the joy of the moment.
The "At Home" Remedies
1. The "Happy House" Diffuser: Diffuse 5 drops of Orange and 2 drops of Cinnamon. This classic combination creates an atmosphere of warmth, safety, and cheer—perfect for family gatherings.
2. Cellulite Smoothing Oil: Mix 5 drops of Orange and 3 drops of Juniper Berry in 20ml of carrier oil. Massage into the thighs and glutes daily to encourage circulation and skin toning.
3. Evening Unwind Bath: Mix 4 drops of Orange and 2 drops of Lavender in a tablespoon of carrier oil. Add to a warm bath to help "wash off" a stressful workday and prepare for sleep.
Synergy Blend
The "Bright Horizons" Blend Add to a diffuser to clear away morning grumpiness or mental fatigue
· 5 drops Orange (Sweet)
· 3 drops Grapefruit
· 1 drop Peppermint
Blending Partners
Bay, Black Pepper, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Clove, Coriander, Frankincense, Geranium, Ginger, Jasmine, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Myrrh, Neroli, Petitgrain, Rose, and Sandalwood.
Safety Data, Warnings, & Precautions
Sweet Orange is generally non-phototoxic (unlike Bitter Orange or Lemon), meaning it is safer for use on the skin before sun exposure in low dilutions. However, it is still a citrus oil; avoid very high concentrations in direct sunlight. It can cause skin irritation if the oil has oxidized (gone past its shelf life).
Available sizes: 13ml
