MANDARIN
Mandarin
Botanical Name: Citrus reticulata Botanical Family: Rutaceae
Quick Facts
· Extraction Method: Cold Expression
· Part Used: Fruit Peel
· Aroma Note: Top
The Profile
The Mandarin tree was originally a native of China (hence the name) but was brought to Europe and the Americas in the 1800s. Often confused with Tangerine, the Mandarin has a much deeper, sweeter, and more complex floral aroma. It is often referred to as the "Children’s Oil" because of its exceptionally gentle nature and its sweet, comforting scent that kids instinctively love. It is one of the safest citrus oils to use and is highly prized for its ability to prevent stretch marks.
Therapeutic Actions
Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Carminative, Digestive, Diuretic (mild), Laxative (mild), Sedative (nervous), Stimulant (digestive and lymphatic), Tonic (stomachic).
Usage & Benefits
· Skin: Acne, oily skin, and scars. It is most famous for its use in preventing stretch marks during pregnancy (usually blended with Neroli and Lavender). It helps to soften the skin and maintain elasticity.
· Respiratory: Not a primary respiratory oil, but it is very soothing when used in a diffuser for children with nighttime coughs.
· Digestive: Dyspepsia, flatulence, and "hiccups." It is a gentle tonic for the entire digestive system and is excellent for settling a "nervous stomach."
· Circulatory/Muscular: Helps with fluid retention and can assist in moving a sluggish lymphatic system.
· Nervous System: Insomnia, nervous tension, and restlessness. Unlike Lemon or Lime, which are primarily stimulating, Mandarin is profoundly sedative and calming.
Emotional Benefit
Mandarin is the "Oil of Inner Child." It helps to reconnect us with the simple joy, playfulness, and innocence of childhood. It is particularly helpful for those who feel overburdened by adult responsibilities or who have become "too serious." It dissipates dark moods and encourages a sweet, lighthearted perspective on life.
The "At Home" Remedies
1. Sleepy-Time Massage (for kids): Mix 1 drop of Mandarin with 1 teaspoon of Sweet Almond oil. Massage into the soles of the feet before bedtime to help a restless child settle into sleep.
2. Soothing Belly Rub: Mix 2 drops of Mandarin with a teaspoon of carrier oil and massage in a clockwise direction to ease hiccups or minor digestive gas in adults or children.
3. Pregnancy Skin Support: Mix 3 drops of Mandarin and 2 drops of Frankincense into 10ml of Rosehip oil. Apply daily to the abdomen and hips to keep skin supple and minimize stretch marks.
