Camphor

Botanical Name: Cinnamomum camphora Botanical Family: Lauraceae

Quick Facts

·         Extraction Method: Steam Distillation

·         Part Used: Wood, Stumps, and Branches

·         Aroma Note: Top

The Profile

Camphor is a large evergreen tree native to China, Japan, and Taiwan, often living for over a thousand years. The oil is unique because it must be distilled from trees that are at least 50 years old. During the distillation of the wood, a crude oil is produced that contains white crystals. This crude oil is then re-distilled and "fractionated" into three types: White, Yellow, and Brown.

White Camphor is the only one used in aromatherapy; Yellow and Brown Camphor are considered toxic due to high safrole content. The aroma is legendary—sharp, cool, medicinal, and intensely penetrating. It is the core scent of many famous chest rubs and muscle balms.

Therapeutic Actions

Analgesic, Antidepressant (mild), Antiseptic, Antispasmodic, Antiviral, Cardiac Stimulant, Carminative, Diaphoretic, Insecticide, Laxative, Rubefacient.

Usage & Benefits

·         Respiratory: One of the most powerful oils for clearing the breath. It is a potent expectorant that helps break up congestion and opens the bronchial tubes. It is specifically useful for the "chilled" stage of a cold or flu.

·         Muscular: A renowned rubefacient, meaning it draws blood to the surface of the skin. This creates a warming effect that eases muscle aches, arthritis, and joint stiffness. It is a staple for sports recovery.

·         Skin: In low dilutions, it is used to treat oily skin and acne. Its cooling effect also makes it helpful for reducing the "heat" and itching of insect bites.

·         Circulatory: It is a cardiac stimulant, helping to boost low blood pressure and improve overall circulation for those who feel chronically cold.

·         Insecticide: Historically used to protect clothing from moths and to repel mosquitoes and flies.

Emotional Benefit

Camphor is the "Oil of Clarity and Purging." It is used to clear a "heavy" or "cloudy" atmosphere. If you feel mentally stagnant or trapped in a repetitive thought loop, Camphor provides a sharp, cold blast of reality that clears the cobwebs. It helps "cool" intense emotional outbursts and provides the mental space needed to think objectively.

The "At Home" Remedies

1.       The "Clear Breath" Chest Rub: Mix 2 drops of White Camphor and 4 drops of Eucalyptus in 20ml of carrier oil. Massage into the chest and back to ease heavy congestion.

2.      Moth-Away Sachets: Place 2 drops of Camphor on a cotton ball and tuck it into your wardrobe or drawers to protect woolens from moths.

3.       Warming Foot Massage: For those with "icy feet," mix 1 drop of Camphor with a teaspoon of carrier oil and massage the soles of the feet to stimulate blood flow.
