·         Aroma Note: Base

The Profile

Benzoin is a balsamic resin obtained from the bark of a large tropical tree native to Southeast Asia. The essential oil—technically a resinoid—is thick and viscous with a rich, warm, and intensely sweet aroma reminiscent of vanilla. It has been used for thousands of years in incense and medicine, particularly in the famous "Friar’s Balsam," an old-fashioned remedy for respiratory complaints.

Therapeutic Actions

Antiseptic, Anti-inflammatory, Antioxidant, Antispasmodic, Anxiolytic, Carminative, Cicatrizant, Cordial, Deodorant, Diuretic, Expectorant, Sedative, Vulnerary.

Usage & Benefits

·         Skin: Excellent for dry, cracked, or chapped skin, redness, and irritation. It creates a protective layer on the skin and is highly valued for healing "split" skin on fingers or heels.

·         Respiratory: Asthma, bronchitis, chills, coughs, laryngitis, and sore throats. Its warming nature helps to "thaw" out cold, congested lungs.

·         Digestive: Flatulence and stomach cramps. It acts as a carminative, helping to soothe the digestive tract.

·         Circulatory/Muscular: Poor circulation and muscular aches. It is a warming oil that helps move "stagnant" energy and blood.

·         Nervous System: Anxiety, nervous tension, and stress-related complaints. It is one of the most comforting oils in aromatherapy.

Emotional Benefit

Benzoin is known as "The Comforter." It provides a psychological "hug," creating a sense of being wrapped in a warm blanket. It is particularly effective for those who feel lonely, anxious, or emotionally exhausted, helping to ground the spirit and provide a sense of profound security.

The "At Home" Remedies

1.       Heal-All Salve for Cracked Skin: Mix 2 drops of Benzoin with 1 teaspoon of Calendula oil or a heavy unscented cream and apply to cracked heels or dry knuckles to seal and heal the skin.

2.      Steam for Laryngitis: Add 1 drop of Benzoin and 1 drop of Lavender to a bowl of steaming water. Cover your head with a towel and inhale to soothe a lost voice or raw throat.

3.       Anxiety Anchor: Rub 1 drop of Benzoin (diluted in a small amount of carrier oil) onto the wrists when feeling overwhelmed or panicky to create an immediate sense of emotional stillness.
